Today, it has been revealed that Democratic Presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois has an aunt that is living illegally in the United States. Obama’s aunt is Zeituni Onyango, who had her immigration request for asylum denied. Still, Onyango remained in the country.
So far, it is not clear on what Onyango’s status is.
However, there are questions and suspicions raised about the timing of this release. This came in just two days before Election Day on November 4. So far, Democratic Representative John Conyers of Michigan, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, is demanding answers.
Conyers had sent a letter to Michael Chertoff, the Secretary of Homeland Security, on where the information leak originated from.
“I was startled to read in today’s Associated Press that a ‘federal law enforcement official’ has leaked information about an immigration case involving a relative of Senator Obama,” Conyers wrote in the letter.
So far, Conyers has urged Chertoff to launch an investigation into the matter. However, Conyers is not the only one to comment on the matter. The Obama campaign is also looking for answers as well. So far, it is returning the donations from Onyongo as a result.
David Axelrod, the chief strategist for the Obama campaign, is suspicious about the timing of this information release. He thinks the timing of this story is “fishy.” So far, the Obama campaign has stated that it has no knowledge of Onyango’s status.
Overall, the timing of the release of the story is raising suspicions and red flags. Axelrod feels that the timing is suspicious. At the same time, Conyers is demanding answers and urging Chertoff to launch an investigation on the leaking of the immigration case.
In the days that prelude to Election Day on November 4, perhaps there will be more people raising suspicions on the matter. While Conyers and Axelrod are suspicious, it is only a matter of time before others will also raise their suspicions.
Perhaps this story could bring up a last minute discussion on the issue of immigration?
