To write is to read. The sentence may sound and seem quite ordinary. Everybody knows that after all to write is to read.Nothing new about it. But though the sentence may seem quite abstract, there is something interesting about it.
When man was a nomad he communicated with other people only through signs and some strange sounds.Gradually when man got accultured, speech as a faculty developped. As man got more civilised and when he began to perform multifarious activities, man had to necessarily develop the faculty of writing for the purpose of creating a record so as to remind himself of something which required or involved a repetitive action and to convey his or her idea to a person who was far away.
When science and technology and various faculties and disciplines developped and when man got engrossed himself in multifarious activities, the art of writing had grown manifold with many offshoots and branches.
Some distinct forms of writings we often come across and developped by man is letter writing, writing articles, essays, poems, short stories, novels, comments and reviews and of late with the development of online writing, blogs, posts, poems, short stories, novels etc.
Those who specialise themselves in writing and take writing as a profession is called as a writer. It is often said that a writer should confine himself on writing about which he or she has some expertise. Then it means a doctor can and should write only about his area of expertise, i.e about medical field.A lawyer should and can write about his or her expertise i.e all about law. An engineer can and should write only about the technical expertise he has got.
But when we generally consider the area of expertise of a writer, it is not localised and confined to any particular area of expertise.Of course when we consider the common nomenclature i.e writer, he is expected to write anything on any subject.Of course a writer can be a poet, a story writer, an essayist, a writer can write an article on any given topic or subject. It all depends upon the back ground of a writer and how far he evince interest on a particular subject and has a grasp over it.Of course a writer may not be an omniscient, but he is not a technocrat nor confine himself on any given subject; he is more than that.He is a multifaceted personality. In short a writer is a writer and knows something about everything and capable of writing anything about something.
Now the most relevant question of this article begins. Why does a writer write ?For the sheer pleasure of writing and mental satisfaction ?Then he may confine his writing with his personal diary. But when a writer writes in a magazine or in a newspaper or a journal, the purpose of his writing is to communicate with his readers,to spread his knowledge and ideas. While the writing of a writer on the one hand sharpens his skill of writing and the other hand he emancipates his knowledge.
The duty of a writer while writing has some moral bindings. After all he is writing for his readers and so he should come forward with a good content, free from any vices that may spoil his readers and the society as well.It is also the duty of a writer that whatever he writes should be intelligible, interesting, informative, inspiring and of course thought-provoking.
A writer when he choose writing as his career, should be receptive of criticisms of his writings, which he gets as feedbacks for his writings from the readers. The writings of a writer has got his own impact on his readers. Similarly the criticisms of the readers has got its own impact on the writer. In fact a writer gets moulded, shaped, grows only by the criticisms of his readers of his writings.A writer in fact becomes a full-fledged writer only through the well meaning criticisms that he receives from his readers.
Therefore, the sentence ‘to write is to read ‘ has got its own far reaching manifestations.
