Philip Morris has been ordered by a Florida Court to cough up 8 million dollars to the widow and her family of a lung cancer victim. However, the Court rejected her argument claiming a compensation of 130 million dollars holding the Company responsible for her husband, Stuart Hess’s death, on the ground that he was also responsible for inviting his own death by smoking three packets a day.
The tobacco giant has reacted by stating that it would vigorously defend itself by going on an appeal. The ruling, if not turned down by a higher court, would have far reaching implications for 8000 and odd trials pending on similar grounds in the Southern State of U.S.A.
