Toll rises to 19 in Karachi violence

Ten people were killed over the last 24 hours, AP quoted the police as saying.

At the city’s Banaras chowk, unknown gunmen opened fire on a passenger bus killing six people and wounding one other.

Earlier, in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area, Wali Khan Babar, a reporter associated with Geo News, was shot dead by unknown assailants.

In a separate incident of firing in Liquatabad, one person was gunned down.

Meanwhile, one person was shot dead in the city’s Korangi area.

Moreover, one person wounded during firing in Karachi’s Lyari area succumbed to his injuries at the Civil Hospital.

In another incident of firing, Awami National Party (ANP) leader Bashir Khan was gunned down near Hasan Square.

Two bodies were also recovered from separate parts of the city. Both victims had been shot dead.

Police officer Rafiq Gul said Friday the slayings were ”target killings”, the phrase used by authorities to describe political or ethnically motivated murders. He gave no more details.

Karachi, a port city of about 18 million, has a long history of political, ethnic and religious strife.

Last year bouts of violence claimed the lives of scores of people, weakening the governments as well as the already anaemic economy.
