Tony Rezko has had ties to US Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama. Rezko was taken into custody outside of his home on the outskirts of Chicago. This came after a notion by the government to revoke his bond. He was referred as a slumlord by rival US Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton.
So far, Rezko has pleaded not guilty to federal charges that include: conspiracy, influence peddling, and demanding kickbacks from companies that were looking to seek business from the state of Illinois.
Obama who spoke on Sunday to “This Week” on ABC said that he has known Rezko for 20 years. Rezko had contributed to the campaigns of many Democrats with Barack Obama included. However, Obama had vowed to give up all contributions from Tony Rezko.
When asked about money received from Rezko, Obama answered: “What we’ve done is we’ve traced any funds that we know of that we think were connected to him. And if there any other funds that were connected to him that we’re not aware of, then we will certainly return them. It’s in our interest to do so.”
Also in a debate, Obama has said that he only did about five hours of work for a Rezko project while being an attorney. So far, Obama has not been accused of doing anything wrong.
“I did make a mistake by purchasing a small strip of property from him, at a time where, at that point, he was under the cloud of a potential investigation,” he said to ABC Sunday.
