Traffic police has identified habitual violators of traffic rules and recommended cancellation of over 1000 driving licenses to the two regional transport officers of the state.
In an interesting development, the traffic police has generated a list that includes habitual traffic violators who have been challaned more than twice for flouting traffic safety norms.
"There were about 500 habitual violators from Srinagar region and over 400 from Jammu region and the lists have forwarded to Regional transport offices (RTO) for cancellation of their licenses" told authorized source in traffic police.
The Traffic Police Department has also planned to treat any kind of road violation as a "criminal offence" wherein cases under Section 307 of the RPC will be registered against erring drivers, particularly those found indulging in rash driving and using mobile phones while driving.
"We have also decided to enhance the on-the-spot penalty against the traffic violators for even minor offences and department would not spare the habitual offenders and initiate strict action against them. If a person continues to violate traffic rules, his or her driving licence will be cancelled permanently," Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hemant Kumar Lohia told while speaking to Kashmir Images. "The purpose of imposing a heavy penalty is to infuse a sense of responsibility among the people to follow the road safety norms." He added
According to the sources there were minimum two-wheeler riders driving without a crash helmet are fined between Rs 100 and Rs 200 and drivers using mobile phones are fined anything between Rs 500 to Rs 700.
Lohia said, "As far the problems of rash driving and overloading in hilly areas are concerned, we will not spare the guilty drivers, particularly the habitual offenders, and they will be booked under stringent laws. Traffic violations need to be treated seriously and these should be made into a criminal offence".
