Tribal people around the world are considerably remained the marginalized citizens of the world in terms of support and protection from their respective governments. The tribal or indigenous people, known for their subdued country living and distinct lifestyles, apparently not getting enough attention from the authorities concerned. The modern world brought about by greed, power and discrimination continuously causing untold miseries to the tribal people.
The indifference of authorities towards the tribal people makes them more marginalized like the Aborigines of Australia, the Indians of South and North America, the Roma society of Europe, the Lumads, Aetas, Mangyans, Dumagats, Badjaos of the Philippines and other tribal people all over the world.
However, their miseries are not without a fight and activism and rallying support from their fellow tribal groups is what brings these people together. The latest of them is Russell Means, the American Indian who this 20 December 2007 publicly announced the withdrawal of the Lakota Sioux from all treaties with the United States government. This may sound weird but Mr. Means means business.
Russell Means maybe a fighter in his own right but his “brother in blood” in Central and South America were at a loss. The Ayoreo-Totobiegosode Indians of Paraguay and their relatives in Peru were in constant treat of eviction from their forest homes. Multi-national mining companies and developers with the backing of international opportunists are on the attack mode – destroying the tribal people’s habitat.
The same thing is happening in the Philippines. Tribal people are relegated to the countryside and most lives in the boondocks. The Aetas, Mangyans and Dumagats stayed in the mountains all their lives. The Badjaos could be seen in the shorelines of Mindanao, the southern part of the Philippines. All these people are considered the worst marginalized sector of society. Leaving them behind is definitely an act of injustice.
