1888 Press Release – A recent AmeriQuest blog looks at how the driver shortage is becoming a multi-national issue.
CHERRY HILL, NJ – With the shortage of truck drivers at the top of mind for today’s fleet executives, NationaLease’s recruitment expert Jane Clark takes a close look at reasons behind this issue in a blog posted on the AmeriQuest Business Services Website.
“Long stretches away from home and family and too much time spent eating unhealthy food, as well as getting too little exercise have always been barriers to recruiting new drivers,” she says. “Now add in the HOS (hours of service) rules limiting the time spent driving, and drivers who are paid by the mile are now losing money they once could have relied on.”
Clark points out that this has become a problem not only in the United States. She cites a BusinessWeek.com article which explains why the driver shortage extends to other countries, including Germany, where drivers are faced with even more stringent regulations than those confronting their American counterparts. The blog suggests some solutions to the shortage, which has become one of the top 10 U.S. trucking industry concerns, according to an American Transportation Research Institute survey.
