Conspiracy theories abound following yesterday’s tragic road accident which killed Susan Tsvangirai, wife to Zimbabwe Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai. Mr. Tsvangirai survived the accident.
CNN had this to say: "Zimbabwe’s prime minister believes the truck driver that struck his car, killing his wife, deliberately drove toward them".
Clear assassination move orchestrated by President Robert Mugabe, right? But CNN deliberately avoids the crucial details around this conspiracy.
The truck in question, a Nissan UD, registration number 81TCE128, is the property of the US international aid agency, USAID. According to various authoritative reports, the truck was purchased by the US Embassy in Harare. During the fatal crush, the truck was transporting AIDS medicine donated by the US government.
In my experience working with international development agencies in Zimbabwe, these agencies often hire individuals far removed from the Mugabe regime. It makes sense. Opreatives of Mr. Mugabe’s Central Intelligence Organization (CIO) are experts at the art of infiltration.
The Mail & Guardian reports that the driver was "a Zimbabwean hired by the US". I suppose both the US government and USAID had a momentary lapse in judgment and hired a Mugabe hit man as a driver?
Besides, all Zimbabwe’s roads are in a poor state of repair after years of biting economic sanctions and neglect.
