The bombardments by the Turkish military have been condemned by the Kurdish region’s president, Massoud Barzani. He had explained that thousands of innocent people have been killed in those raids.
In the past eight days, jets from the Turkish military had carried out three strikes on Kurdish targets. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is blamed for launching attacks on Turkish soil from bases in Northern Iraq.
In October, Turkey approved cross-border raids on their bases. However, both the United States and Iraq told Turkey to use restraint. While the PKK is hiding out in this area, the Kurdish occupied region is considered the most stabilized. Turkey has complained that they have not done enough to stop the attacks by the PKK.
Mr. Barzani explains: “Several people were either killed or wounded. We held consultations with [Iraqi] President Jalal Talabani and we will continue our consultations with other concerned parties to put an end to these aggressions and put an end to the shelling of villages.”
According to BBC, the Turkish ambassador to Iraq has been summoned to hear a formal complaint. About 10 people have been killed in the air raids. But, it is still unknown whether they are PKK or civilians.
