Surprised that Canada gets some love, except from Turkey, Russia, according to a BBC poll released Friday? You shouldn’t.
Canada is still viewed globally as having a positive influence on the world, second only to Germany. According to the poll, this view is held in the Philippines, US, China, Italy, UK, Egypt, Australia, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Indonesia and India.
On Turkey’s view, the poll says: “In 2007, 20 per cent of Turkish people viewed Canada as having a negative influence. Now, that figure has jumped to 49 per cent.”
Turkey’s view is based on Canada’s recognition of the 1915 Armenian genocide, committed by Ottoman Turkey.
Canada should never apologize for condemning genocide and other crimes against humanity.
In Russia “positive views of Canada deteriorated significantly from 2007 – dropping from 51 per cent to 36 per cent”, according to the poll.
The pollsters could not say why. Obviously, to Russia, Canada is another US, which they dislike a lot more.
In any case, no single country can expect to be “loved” by every other country in the world.
