TV School for Iraqi children: example for other conflict-hit countries

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Iraqi education ministry on Tuesday jointly launched an educational TV channel Iraqi Edu in Iraq.

According to UNESCO sources, the new television facilitates distance learning tools for Iraqi teachers and pupils while not deviating from their school curriculum.

This is likely to be a very useful learning tool for a large number of Iraqi children compelled to be confined to their bedroom due to widespread terror and senseless suicidal bomb explosions that kill dozens every day.

Besides, the Iraqi Edu also intends to disseminate messages of peace and tolerance to contribute to peace-building and reconciliation process in the country.

This educational TV project has the weight of US$6.5 million.
The 24-hour TV channel will especially target at primary and secondary school students.

Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura said, “It is crucial, especially in these difficult circumstances, to support everyone’s right to education, and to use innovative methods to reach all students. Education plays an essential role in building peace and reconstruction.”

Moreover, the UNESCO Director-General also feels that such an educational approach combined with the mass media may be exemplary in other conflict-hit countries.
