A couple may likely be charged for "failing to provide the necessities in life" and it may be upgraded to murder or manslaughter after the decomposing bodies of their 18-month-old twins were found inside the front room of their rented Sunnybank house in Brisbane last Monday.
Authorities found out that the children, a boy and a girl, had been dead for nine days and was only discovered by their 11-year-old daugther because of the foul smell coming from the twin’s room. She then confronted the mother by telling her "now i know why you’re crying."
The twins’ weights were comparable to newborns (one at 3.6 kgs, the other one at 4 kgs) and showed signs that they may have suffered from malnutrition before they died. They had been inside the front room of their house and shared a single cot for all of their lives while the couple’s four other kids aged 11, 3, 4 and 5 lived and played outside. Allegedly, the parents had relationship problems and the father claimed that, even if they lived in the same house, he hadn’t seen the twins since Christmas and, although he passed near the front room door everyday as he went to work, he "wasn’t aware" of his younger childrens’ condition, neither was he told about their deaths till the Monday night discovery.
When asked about the matter, the mother said she already knew at about the 8th or 9th of June that her twin children had died but didn’t report it. She alleged that she suffered from a cold which why she rarely changed or fed them. She also told the police, "I don’t think i fed them enough."
The couple may have to undergo psychiatric treatment prior to facing the court while their other children are now under the care of their grandmother.
