Tymoshenko’s Bid for PM Blocked By Parliament

Ms. Yulia Tymoshenko needed two-hundred and twenty-six votes to win the majority. However, Ms. Tymoshenko was one vote short of getting the absolute majority. She had won two-hundred and twenty-five votes.

She has already served as prime minister in 2005. Ms. Tymoshenko was nominated by President Viktor Yushchenko who is Pro-Western. Both Yushchenko and Tymoshenko are political allies.

Both Tymoshenko’s block and the pro-Yuschenko party “Our Ukraine” have a majority of just two in the parliament. One MP said that his voting card did not work. The parliamentary speaker called for a second vote once a short recess is in order.

For many months, the country has been politically deadlocked.

Both of them had led the Orange Revolution in 2004. They ousted a presidential candidate that was backed by Russia. Mr. Yuschenko had become president after there were protests on the street. He had defeated his rival Viktor Yanukovych who had won. However, Yanukovych’s win was condemned as a fraud.

While Ms. Tymoshenko was appointed as PM early 2005, she would be fired later due to divisions amongst Orange Revolution.

Afterwards, Yuschenko had fraught relations with Yanukovych who had become PM in the 2006 parliamentary elections.
