The wealthier a nation, the more it pollutes. The poorer a nation, the less it pollutes. Water for crops dries up in Tanzania, while in Bangladesh floods wash away coastal homes. Climate change can devastate poor communities. Read about ways to reverse the trend in the Acting pages of Tear Times. And as the UN conference on climate change convenes in Buenos Aires this week, pray that Tearfund’s team there will succeed in influencing the outcome to benefit poor people.
I’m not too bothered who influences the UN but I do pray that all the member states will be persuaded to get their act together and work to reduce global warming. As individuals we can also do our bit to reduce fuel consumption and pollution. Global warming causes real problems for poor people as the recent hurricanes in the South West of the US and the Carribean show. It was unpleasant enough for the effected states, but far more devastating in the Carribean.
