The mass demonstrations in Myanmar, led by thousands of monks, could attest to the fact that the military junta had gone out of hand in enforcing its military rule in a country where massive poverty is killing many of its people. As shown in the footages on how the military went after the demonstrators was a show of sheer brutality against defenseless humans, whose only purpose why they went to the streets was their response to skyrocketing prices of gasoline and other commodities.
At this point, it seemed the Myanmar’s military junta is insensitive to the complaints of the demonstrators, if only to protect their political interests for more than 40 years now. With China, India and Russia as it allies, Myanmar looked determined to pursue its economic and political goals even at the expense of wasting human lives. And they didn’t care how many will suffer in the hands of its oppressive and aggressive military pawns, who thought of themselves as robots by obeying the dictates of their military commanders. And who wouldn’t think that these soldiers don’t have any relatives out there who support the demonstrators?
Now, the White House had expressed deep concerns and apprehensions over the present developments in Myanmar. What it did was to ask China to pressure the military junta to take it easy considering that the international communities are well aware of what’s happening out there. Perhaps, the only thing that the west can do right now is to impose immediate sanctions on the Myanmar government to put a stop of all its atrocities to the people. But for lunatics who are at the forefront of power, sensitivity is nothing compared to the bullets that the soldiers used to silence those who oppose them. The United Nations must do something about it before it’s too late. At the moment, freedom in Myanmar is a myth as thousands of international journalists were barred from entering the country to cover the unrest. This is the government’s way of hiding its atrocities to the attention of the world. In retaliation, maybe, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations must do something to put sanctions against Myanmar.
