I was just looking over the 2006 Eagle Forum Questionnaire that Sarah Palin filled out when she was running for governor of Alaska when I caught this little segment.
11. Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?
Sarah Palin: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.
Do I need to point out that the Pledge of Allegiance did not contain the words "Under God" during the time of the "Founding Fathers"? President Eisenhower, in 1954, signed the words into the Pledge. That’s just a bit more recent.
Heck, the Pledge itself wasn’t even written until 1892, almost a hundred years after George Washington’s death.
To me, this shows that Palin was either attempting to rile up conservative support by taking the traditional against-the-secularist movement, or she genuinely didn’t know the actual pledge or it’s original non-religious undertones.
Either way, not that good.
