In a new report, hundreds were killed in the violence in 2007 while over a thousand were detained by the authorities. Each month, at least 25,000 families must leave their homes in order to seek shelter in other parts of Iraq. However, Unicef explains that the fall in violence within the previous months opens a bigger window for international assistance.
General David Petraeus, the top US military commander in Iraq told BBC in an interview that the violent attacks in the country has been at its lowest in two and a half years. The figures say that 536 Iraqis have died this month which is lower compared to December 2006.
Unicef had said that the children of Iraq had paid too high of a price for the turmoil in the country according to the titled report, “Little Respite for Iraq’s Children in 2007.” They say that this year has gotten worse for the children.
The report explains that an average of 25,000 children are displaced from their families each month as they feel from violence and/or intimidation. It further explains that by end of the year, 75,000 children are living in camps or temporary shelters.
Unicef explains that the turmoil erodes access to education and healthcare for these children.
