So far, the Kurdish occupied area is the most stable part of Iraq. The United States had feared any kind of military intervention would destabilize the region. Current United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates explained that both countries needed better intelligence on where the PKK rebels were located before taking military action.
United States has provided Turkey with the information. However, they didn’t explain how they gathered the intelligence shared with Turkey. At the same time both Iraq and Iran decided to curb the activities of the PKK rebels. However, at a recent conference, both countries refused border tensions to dominate the conference. While Iraq and Turkey are dealing with the PKK, Iran is dealing with another Kurdish rebel group called the Pejack.
Iraq’s Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari who is a Kurd explained that the number of checkpoints has been increased. That would keep the PKK from getting food and fuel. It would keep the rebels from reaching highly populated areas.
