University of Malawi hit by brain drain

The University of Malawi Pro Vice Chancellor Proffessor  Kamwanja recently lamented at a intellectual Diaspora workshop that the University of Malawi has lost many lecturers to other Universities because of low salaries and deaths.

Professor Kamwanja said salaries in most unibversities are 500 perecent higher that those from the University of Malawi.

He said  lecturers are justified when they ask government to increase their salaries by 500 percent.

Most lecturers at the University left in 1995 when the government could not address the problem of salaries.

Two months ago lecturers threatened that they would strike should the government not increase salaries by 500 percent.

Most professionals condemned the move saying it would derail the marking of examinations of students who at that time would be on leave.

In his inaugural speech the State President Dr. Bingu Wa Mutharika  told the nation he will make sure the University of Malawi’s operations are not disturbed by strikes.
