US may lift ban on HIV infected visitors and immigrates by a Senate bill.
The ban was imposed in 1987 later confirmed by congress in 1993.
US is among 12 countries including Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Russia which ban on HIV infected travelers and immigrates.
Senator John Kerry said at a speech to the Center for Strategic & International Studies HIV/AIDS Task Force that there should be no excuse for a law, which stigmatizes a particular disease. Even patient with avian flu, Ebola virus faced no difficulties than those with HIV in case of obtaining visa.
John Kerry and Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore are trying to abolish the ban.
According to yahoo news, The two have attached their measure to legislation, which the Senate may pass this week, that would provide $50 billion over the next five years to fight AIDS and other diseases in Africa and other poor areas.
HIV is only disease explicitly listed under immigration law.
Although HIV infected people who are seeking permanent residency in this country have to mention the resource to live in this country and would not be a public charge.
