Six Republican candidates participated in the event. Four Democrats also participated in the New Hampshire debates. Before the debate, Mitt Romney had won the Republican caucus in Wyoming.
In Iowa, Mitt Romney came at a steep second while Mike Huckabee had come in first. In New Hampshire, the polls suggest that Romney is closing the gap on John McCain.
They were joined by Rudy Giuliani, Ron Paul, and Fred Thompson. These debates were organized by ABC. In the Republican debates, Mike Huckabee defended his comments that President George W. Bush had pursued a foreign policy that was arrogant and had bunker mentality.
Also, he had attacked Mitt Romney of not supporting Bush’s decision last year to increase the number of US troops in Iraq.
“I supported the surge before you did,” Huckabee said in his attack on Romney.
“Don’t try to mischaracterise my position,” Romney fired back.
On the Democratic debate side, it was the first clash between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama after Obama’s victory in Iowa. The recent polls give the suggestion that Clinton’s New Hampshire lead might be shrinking.
Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel were excluded from the debates due to failing to finish in the top four in Iowa.
