US soldier killed in Afghanistan when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms

Command Sgt. Maj. Martin R Barreras, 49, of Tucson, Arizona killed in Afghanistan. 

The Pentagon announced today the death of a US Army soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

“Command Sgt. Maj. Martin R Barreras, 49, of Tucson, Arizona, died May 13, in San Antonio Military Medical Center, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, from wounds suffered on May 6, in Harat Province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.”

Herat province shares borders with Iran and Turkmenistan, making it one of the most strategically  important provinces of Afghanistan. It is a hotbed of insurgent activity.

Command Sgt. Major Barreras was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

The 1st Armored Division—nicknamed “Old Ironsides” —is the only standing armored division of the United States Army, with its base of operations in Fort Bliss, Texas.

It was the first armored division of the U.S. Army to see battle in World War II.
