The US Navy said Thursday that the USS Huston nuclear powered submarine has been steadily leaking radioactive materials for two years.
The USS Houston has been docked at three ports in Japan, one in Guam and at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii since the leakage started in June, 2006. The Navy reports that the amount of nuclear material released into the water and atmosphere is minimal and won’t affect the environment or humans.
The news of the USS Houston leak comes on the eve of the US Navy’s plans to dock the nuclear powered USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier in the Japanese port of Yokosuka, the same one that hosted the USS Houston. Japanese officials agreed that the USS Houston’s leakage will not affect the environment or humans and will still allow the USS George Washington to dock in Yokosuka.
