Just in case you believed that Vancouver is Lotusland, Shangri La, or even ‘The Best Place on Earth’ then the events of the last few days will surely disabuse you of those notions.
Ethnic tensions have surfaced at the University of British Columbia due to Israel’s invasion of Gaza. According to the Vancouver Media, an ‘Arab’ confronted four Jews because they were tearing down posters of Palestinian leaders. The busy ‘Arab’ then confronted six more Jews an hour later outside his dorm. On each occasion, the ‘Arab’ chased the fleeing Jews and caught one of them.
Now, as you may have guessed, the two Jews claim they have been traumatized by the ‘attacks’ and need counselling. Apparently, the ‘Arab’ also tore off their Star of David pendants. Of course, as this is the Vancouver media, the report is biased towards Israel. The managing director of the Vancouver Hillel Foundation was given the opportunity to broadcast some propaganda. He was quoted as saying that there was a very active anti_Israeli campaign at UBC, though of course he didn’t explain why the Jewish students were defacing the posters in the first place.
Apparently, a safe-buddy walking program has been set up for Jewish students, though it seems as though they don’t need this scheme, as they already go around in sixes and fours, tearing down posters they don’t like.
Besides Vancouver’s biased, crap media it also has more than its fair share of gang problems. There were three murders in a period of 24 hours. One of these was a fatal shooting in a mall car-park in the early evening. On The Skytrain at midnight, a 13-year old boy, with around 75 arrests in the last year, stabbed someone who wouldn’t give him a cigarette.
