Varsha Sabhnani was sentenced today for 11 years in prison for humiliating and enslaving maids in her Long Island mansion. Speaking to the press, Varsha Sabhnani said, "I was brought to this earth to help people who are in need."
Varsha Sabhnani, 46, and her husband brought the maids over from Indonesia. Once here, Varsha Sabhnani forced the maids to work 20 hour days without pay, instead sending $100 a month to their families in Indonesia. Varsha Sabhnani also allegedly threw scalding hot water on the maids, beat them with sticks and confiscated their passports and visas.
Federal prosecutors argued that Varsha Sabhnani owed the Indonesian maids $1.1 million for their work and suffering.
Varsha Sabhnani was sentenced today. She lives in Muttontown, NY and originally came from India.
