In the near future, over 30,000 skilled professionals will be required in the field of emergency medical care.
This forecast, which may look a bit farfetched for the uninitiated, comes from experts who brought the concept of imparting training and education to develop skilled persons to handle emergency medicare in the country.
The concept of emergency medicare, giving basic treatment to patients before reaching a hospital, is still in its infancy in India.
However, with hospitals realising the importance of such services in reducing mortality rate of patients, especially trauma victims, experts predict the field to grow immensely in the coming years.
“Education on basic emergency medicine was introduced in US about four decades ago. Such skilled persons are in shortage in AP and elsewhere and that’s why training them through a post-graduate programme is vital,” says Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University S. V. Mahadevan, who is a visiting faculty at Emergency Management and Research Institute’s (EMRI) Post-Graduate Programme in Emergency Care (PGPEC).
“Physicians are hard to access in villages. In such cases, persons trained in basic emergency services are lifesavers. It’s an exciting job and would suit only those who have attitude to save lives,” he said.
