The populist President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is now ready to change the constitution of his country. International wire reports noted that Chavez is too eager to re-write the constitution of the land for him to remain as leader of Venezuela without the hassle of electoral processes of which the oppositions wanted him out. But Chavez contended that he only wanted to continue his economic policies in accordance to his ideas of socialist programs.
He further argued that his kind of socialist style of government is the best for the country and can boost his image to confront head-on the influence of US style democracy. His confrontational rhetoric against the US, his alliances with Iran and other rogue states, his domestic policies and his erratic behavior is what his critics termed as “Populist Dictatorship.”
According to some observers, Venezuela could have been a rich country in South America given the fact that it is an oil producing country. But unfortunately, Venezuela’s wealth could not even raise the level of life of the masses.
Based on the old book “The American Continents” published by the California State of Education dated 1947, Venezuela was blessed with oil wealth underneath Lake Maracaibo. Also, the book stated that Venezuela was then the third oil producing country in the world.
So, given the idea that Venezuela was already exporting oil for 60 years, why is it that the country is still marooned in stagnant economic growth? Maybe the people of Venezuela have all the right to protests as what they’re doing now in Venezuela. The country need changes but not with a one man rules so popular with neo dictatorship tendencies.
