Once again the San Siro becomes the epicenter of violence in the Calcio. The problem is that this time, it occurred way outside the stadium. Gabriele Sandri, 26, was trying to break up a fight that broke out at a rest stop in the Badia del Pino area in northwestern Italy. A group of Lazio fans ran into some Juventus supporters tussled. Local police intervened and according to police reports, one office shot some rounds in the air in an effort to disperse the crowd. One of those shots hit Sandri while he tried to help break up the altercation. Sandri was one of the most popular DJs and promoters in the Rome nightlife scene.
The repercussion were felt all the way back in Rome as AS Roma’s match against Cagliari was suspended by order of the Roman mayor and as a measure of respect by the Roman club. AS Roma director Rosella justified this decision by saying that it was "right to ask for the game to be postponed as a sign of solidarity for the Lazio fans and for the city of Roma hit by the death of Gabriele Sandri."This cause an uproar in the giallorossi faithful. Approximately 200 ultras raided CONI headquarters station and vandalized barricades that were set up to prevent fans to enter the building. Roman police responded quickly and countered with rubber bullets and tear gas.
