The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) estimated that in 2012, that the number of “violent crimes increased 0.7 percent”, according to the figures released today. The 2012 statistics show that the estimated rate of violent crime was 386.9 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants.
To help put this into perspective an estimated 1,214,462 violent crimes occurred nationwide and were reported to the FBI in 2012, according to the report released today.
In the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Violent crimes are defined in the UCR Program as those offenses which involve force or threat of force
These and additional data points are presented in the 2012 edition of the FBI’s annual report Crime in the United States. This publication is a statistical compilation of offense and arrest data reported by law enforcement agencies nationwide voluntarily participating in the FBI’s URC program.
