Visions of East Africa

Kenya, in East Africa, has been one of the most stable African countries since its independence from England. Although its government has been fraught with corruption, Kenya has shown slow but steady economic progress. The largest city in Kenya is Nairobi, the capital, followed by Mombassa, a port city on the Indian Ocean. The third largest city in Kenya is Kisumu which is located on the far western end of the country on Lake Victoria. Kisumu is 212 miles from Nairobi.

Kisumu Project, Inc. was conceived in November 2004 as the brain child of Kenneth Osore. Kenneth was born and raised near Kisumu. When returning home to the Kisumu area in 2004, Kenneth was horrified by the economic situation that had developed as a result of slow economic growth and an increase in the HIV/AIDS virus.

Although Kenneth knew the area and people well, he was shocked by the ravage of disease and poverty. Kenneth’s fervor and desire to make the world a better place led him to form Kisumu Project, Inc., a nonprofit organization (501c3). Kisumu Project, Inc. achieved status as an official nonprofit organization in December 2004.

His goal was to create a support network for schools and medical facilities in East Africa. This support network would consist of shipments of medical and school supplies to area facilities that had been neglected by governmental programming and assistance.

Beginning in January 2005, Kisumu Project, Inc, with the help of numerous friends and family members started shipping needed medical supplies, equipment, food, and other needed supplies to Kenya. Since 2005, a shipment is quarterly sent to Kenya thanks to donations provided by the generous people who share Kisumu Project, Inc.’s desire to help the needy.

Kisumu Project, Inc. – Kenya, is a nonprofit organization that works with organizations in the United States and Kenya to bring improved education, health care, spiritual guidance, and related services to Western Kenya. American & Kenyan schools, organizations, churches, and individuals work to:

1)  Refurbish Schools through upgrades (i.e. restrooms & water wells), repairs, and shipments of books and supplies, – Assist needy clinics, dispensaries, and hospitals through shipments of medical equipment and supplies,

2) Provide Christian Communications through Radio Tower Installations with community distributed fix-tuned radios and Solar Powered I-Pods with the New Testament installed,

3) Construct water wells for communities and schools without a clean water source,

4) Provide care for orphans and children of poverty through the building of  free vocational boarding schools for children. It is the intention of this school/project to provide students not only with an academic education, but a foundation in micro-enterprises so that each graduate has the opportunity to make a strong impact upon the development of Kenya as an economic stronghold.

Kisumu Project – Kenya volunteers raise funds to not only rebuild schools and communities in Western Kenya, but to raise cultural awareness about the global crises occurring throughout Africa.

Volunteers visit schools and organizations to present on topics such as water and sanitation development, plight of the orphans of Africa, cultures of Kenya, Kenya through the Eyes of a Child, to name a few. Kisumu Project, Inc. also works with other nonprofits to provide support and input in other projects in the Western Province.

As of 2007, Kisumu Project, Inc. has begun assisting individuals in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in addition to Kenya and Southern Sudan.

Brenda Thonsgaard: I have many interests and passions! My interests include education, social justice, cultures and cultural identities, East Africa, ethnographic studies, narrative inquiry, adoption, orphans, reading/language development disorders/problems, gangs/gang behavior, correlation between reading & behavioral disabilities, and environmental science. My job titles include teacher, consultant, mentor, company president, associate director, dyslexia coach, volunteer, and mother!

I am passionate about many things! One of those things is my work with nonprofit organizations that work with orphans and people of poverty in East Africa. At present, I represent Kisumu Project, Inc. as the Assistant Director. I have found this volunteer position to be both challenging and invigorating. Not only have I met many new people, providing assistance and support to some of them, but I have broadened my understanding of the world and its complex social systems! My experiences working and planning with individuals who are also passionate about making the world a better place has been quite rewarding to say the least!

Teaching, instructional practice, and curriculum development all fit together into another of my passions! At present, I am a doctoral student who is trying to finish up a dissertation and a Dyslexia Coach in school districts in the Houston, Texas, area. My “paycheck earning” career is education! I love teaching and have found that the US high schools can be an invigorating place to teach and learn about human development and behavior! I also enjoy teaching adults/educators how to use a variety of instructional practices to teach students of all ages! I volunteer for Kisumu Project, Inc. in addition to my full-time position as a teacher and Dyslexia Coach. Through Kisumu Project, Inc, I do public speeches, presentations, and world issues activities/fundraisers.

Through Ground Report, I hope to share first hand knowledge about Eastern Africa, its concerns, and potential solutions through the eyes of those who had first hand experiences! I plan on using my background as an educator and life-long student/learner to augment the education levels in Kenya and awareness levels in the United States.

I fervently believe that education and a spiritual foundation can overcome most of the things that haunt our world today. I believe in peace, love, and happiness, in addition to acceptance, support, and caring.
