In my opinion, the issue that affects us locally the most in this cycle is the defeat of Proposition 8 here in California.
The passage of this Proposition would change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.
This is important, not only because it affects people I know and love, not only because it would put the equal rights of Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender people out of reach for decades more, but also because it would be the first time in America that rights have been taken away by constitutional amendment Unbelievable.
Our Federal Constitution has been a beacon of progress for the entire history of our country. First, it gave us the right to our privacy, our speech, our press, due process of law, representation, the sanctity of our homes. Then it afforded us the rights of women and minorities to be full functioning members of our democracy. The Constitution continues to this day to be a symbol of how our society can grow, can become better, can learn from its mistakes.
To turn any Constitution into a document that makes our society smaller and pettier, less fair, is wrong. That is not my America and certainly not my California.
No on 8. Equality for All.
