Over 12 lakh electors eligible to vote, decide fate of 18 contestants in fray today
Srinagar, May 13 – Polling began today in the final phase of five-phased Lok Sabha elections across all 19 Assembly segments of Baramulla and Ladakh Parliamentary constituencies (PCs) spread over five districts of Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Leh and Kargil. Voting for Baramulla and Ladakh Parliamentary seats is picking up steady pace. Long lines of early morning voters can be seen outside polling stations in several Assembly segments of the two constituencies waiting for their turn to cast their ballot. Voters were seen lined up outside several polling stations in the two constituencies waiting for their turn to exercise franchise. About 1,944 polling stations have been set up across the two constituencies to facilitate electors.
Reports of quick polling are being received from Rafiabad, Sonawari, Pattan, Handwara and Kargil Assembly segments of the two constituencies where polling is currently on in the final phase. Heavy polling is underway in several polling stations at Nadihal, in Rafiabad Assembly segment. Mr. Nizamud-Din Shah, a physically-challenged person was among 75 voters who cast their ballot in the first hour of polling at 89-D, Nadihal. At 52-F-Naidkhai, in Sonawari Assembly segment of Baramulla PC, 76 votes had been polled in the first 60 minutes of polling.
Similar enthusiasm is being witnessed in Karnah, Kupwara Handwara and Pattan Assembly segments with people queuing up outside several polling stations to exercise their franchise. In Karnah Assembly segment, Mr. Fazlullah Lone, centurion, cast his ballot early morning at 51-Polling Station, at Kuliyan, in Keran area. Not to be left behind, Raja Begum, 90, cast her vote at 81-Polling Station, Bubenag, in Handwara Assembly segment.
First-time voters, Mr. Ajaz Ahmad and Mr. Manzoor Ahmad, excercised their franchise at 37-E-Hanjiveera polling station set up in Pattan Assembly segment where steady polling is being witnessed.
In Handwara Assembly segment, heavy polling is being reported from various polling stations. At 53-Handwara polling station, 174 votes had been polled till 9.30 a.m. As many as 146 votes had been cast at adjacent 52-Handwara polling station.
Steady polling is being reported from Kema, Malangam, Nasu, Bandipora, Zalpora, Aloosa and Ashtangoo areas of bandipora Assembly segment.
At a few polling stations, women electors outnumbered their male counterparts during the first hour of polling. At Kalmona, in Handwara Assembly segment, out of 64 votes polled during the first hour, 39 were that of females.
Reports of steady polling are also being received from Ladakh Parliamentary constituency. In Titichumik, Kargil, 50 votes had been polled out of 353 till 8 a. m. in the morning. At 69-Skara, in Leh Assembly segment, 103 votes were polled out of 1,253 total votes by 9.30 a. m.
The Election Commission has appointed five Election Observers and 273 Micro Observers to ensure free, fair and transparent polls in the constituencies. Besides, around 8,000 poll personnel have also been deployed on duty and 54 video and digital cameras installed to monitor smooth conduct of polls.
As many as 10,52,971 electors, including 5,49,111 male and 5,03,860 female voters, will decide fate of 13 contestants in fray for Baramulla Parliamentary constituency. The contestants also include two independents and one woman. As many as 1,468 polling stations have been established for voters today.
The Assembly segments going to polls in Baramulla PC are Karnah, Kupwara, Lolab, Handwara and Langate in Kupwara district, Uri, Rafiabad, Sopore, Sangrama, Baramulla, Gulmarg and Pattan in Baramulla district and Gurez, Bandipora and Sonawari in Bandipora district
Similarly, voting began early morning today at Nobra and Leh Assembly segments of Leh district and Kargil and Zanskar segments of Kargil district respectively.
As many as 1,52,495 electors, which include 77,947 male and 74,548 females, will decide fate of five contestants in Ladakh Parliamentary constituency. As many as 476 polling stations have been established for voters today.
