Voting is going on in a run-off to elect a president for Ghana. There are mixed feelings in the country due to some level of intimidation in certain parts of the country a few days to the election.
All the country’s borders have been closed. But there are reports of a heavy presence of security forces – the police and the army in the Volta Region where the opposition NDC has its greatest support. The government says it is to prevent foreigners from taking part in the election. The NDC and the people of the region say it is to intimidate voters.
The voters in certain areas are demanding the withdrawal of the military especially so that they can vote in peace.
There are also reports of people from opposing sides being beaten in the ‘strongholds’ of the each party.
The tension in these areas is creating doubts as to whether the election will be free and fair. The NPP in a press release has threaten not to accept some of the results from the Volta Region because it is allerged that their agents are being beaten.
We are only hoping for a peaceful demouement of these emerging problem.
