Was Serene Branson’s lapse on TV at the Grammy’s really caused by a migraine or are doctors missing something?
Did any doctor ask if she experiences problems sleeping or has any type of sleep disorder, like extreme drowsiness during the day, difficulty going back to sleep at night or any sleep problems that can, or have been, diagnosed as insomnia? Has she experienced extreme fatigue and/or excessive daytime sleepiness every three or four hours during the day? Has she ever fallen asleep at inappropriate times, such as while at work?
She said in a interview she experienced slurred speech, lack of ability to concentrate, impaired vision and loss of facial muscle control, all accompanied by a headache, even though the headache wasn’t mentioned in the first interview Was she asked if she ever had vivid daytime or nighttime hallucinations? All of these symptoms can be signs of narcolepsy with accompanying cataplexy. Cataplexy: a sudden muscular weakness that can be brought on by strong emotions.
Cataplexy is muscular weaknesses ranging from facial muscle weakness, dropping of the jaw or head and weakness in the knees. In severe cases, the speech is slurred, vision is impaired, (double vision, or the inability to focus) and can also result in a total collapse, all with little or no loss of hearing and awareness.
Narcolepsy can be accompanied by two types of hallucinations which are usually vivid and and they can be quite frightening. Generally, the hallucinations are visual but other senses may also be involved. Hypnagogic hallucinations occur during sleep or the onset of sleep and hypnopompic hallucinations occur while awake.
She may want a second opinion, especially if she needs caffeine, other stimulants or alcohol to stay awake during the day.
