It has been established that the campaigns of presumed GOP nominee John McCain and presumed Democratic nominee Barack Obama have different stances and platforms. Obama’s platform is the economy while McCain’s platform. As soon as Obama clinched the Democratic nomination from Hillary Clinton, McCain started off the general election season by going on the offensive.
McCain has attacked Obama on his stance on Iraq. He challenged to go to Iraq and see the progress that is being made. Iraq has been the main platform for McCain’s candidacy. McCain said that Iraq will help or hurt his candidacy. He said that Iraq will be the number one issue this November.
At the same time, Obama has challenged McCain on the economy. He linked McCain’s policies to that of current US President George W. Bush. The economy has been the main platform of Obama’s candidacy. Consistent poll ratings say that most Americans think the issue of the economy is more important. Iraq had come in at a distant second.
So far, McCain’s policies do look similar to Bush’s policies. Under McCain’s policies, the tax cuts do remain. Individuals will be given the responsibility and decisions of their economic future.
At the same time, McCain’s campaign is trying to link Obama to Bush. Many have complained about Bush’s spending. Recently, Bush’s former donors have sided with Obama. Fiscal conservatives have shown frustration at the large amount of spending that has taken place.
In this regard, McCain’s campaign may try to link Obama’s campaign spending to Bush’s spending in office. However, that link would be difficult to make. Obama’s strategy required a lot of spending. He had forced Clinton to continuously spend her money.
Obama’s main task is keeping the main focus on the economy. McCain’s main task is to try to make Iraq the top issue. However, Iraq could be a double-edged sword for McCain. Obama will again link Iraq with the nation’s economy.
So far while in North Carolina, Obama did not go into detail about his economic proposals. The question is, what does Obama exactly plan to do with the nation’s economy? Obama is now going on a two-week tour to address the economy and show differences between himself and McCain.
Recently, Obama called for at least $50 billion to be injected into the country’s economy. Most of it will be used to extend unemployment insurance. About $10 billion will be used for funding. It is unknown what type of funding the $10 billion will be used for. Obama proposes a tax cut. But, it would be for those that make under $150K a year. He plans to increase the taxes on those that make over $150K. In short, the more you make, the more taxes you pay.
Apparently, this is Obama’s initial plan about the state of the US economy. But, no further details have been given out so far. So far, he seems to be doing a good job of linking McCain’s policies to Bush’s current policies. Only way to find out what Obama’s exact plans with the economy are would be to keep track of the election race.
