In recent months, the internet has been riddled with ads imploring women to go back to school to learn something or another. It seems there are dozens of colleges available, all at a ridiculously hefty price, that will "teach" you something or another to make your time more valuable to…someone, I suppose. There’s any number of things one could "learn", it would seem, and every field offered currently has so many lay-offs and job losses that it would be utterly foolish to think that you might have opportunity when you graduated, 2-6 years down the road.
Let’s us have a looksee here. Home Health Care… For some people, extensively trained home health care is a bare necessity. This should include those who are invalids and/or terminally ill. For others, who just need a little help around the house, and a ride to the doctors’ offices or grocery store, just how much training should really be needed? Who needs to be trained to take out the garbage, tend the dishes/laundry, and do a little bit of dusting, seriously? For those who do need extra training to accomplish those simple tasks for someone else, just don’t even consider home health care.
When googling college degrees, there are the most fascinating programs available, at no small expense. Have a look at this description for a Bachelor’s in Art and Design. "So you love to paint, you consider rearranging your furniture every season, and you dream of opening your own clothing line."
Okay… If you love to paint, but don’t know how to paint, getting it right does not come with a degree. It comes with practice. If you like to rearrange your furniture, that’s nice and all, but do you really need a college degree to know how to know where you want your bed?!?!?! Are you ready and willing to pay thousands of dollars to learn how to do what you already know? If you dream of opening your own clothing line, doesn’t that mean that you are already designer quality, and you need to hone up your sewing skills, kick out a few proto-types, and take a little business course or two? Why would anyone specializing in interior design or the fashion world "need" a degree?
Here’s another fine example of how colleges are making millions off of people who don’t even need college. There is actually a Bachelor’s in Communication Arts. Here’s the description. "Communication is more than conversation. Communication is every way we relate to one another: through images, writing, music and speech. Corporations need effective communicators to help them convey the corporate mission to employees, shareholders, and clients. They need communications specialists to advertise their products and services. If you are a strong verbal and visual communicator, a degree in communications arts from an online university will give you the tools to turn your talents into a career." Haha…for those of you who are already strong verbal and visual communicators, get a degree in that, so you can prove you are a strong verbal and visual communicator…erm…. Did the person writing this description even have a high school diploma?
Granted, there are fields of employment that certainly require higher education. Surgeons, for instance, do need to know how to make sure their scalpels are sharp, and nurses do need to know which gauge of needle to use for which task. It’s nice when airplane pilots are educated about every little aspect of the machines they are flying, and architects do need to have a working knowledge of the dynamics of building.
There are courses and degrees, however, that really shouldn’t be degrees or courses. If you are of age to go to college, and you still don’t know your matching colors, you’ve got no business matching colors. If you are of age to go to college, and can pass the SAT’s, why in the world would you need someone to tell you what kind of flowers you want in your own home? Why does a librarian need a degree? If they have graduated high school, they surely have their ABC’s and 123’s in order, and they wouldn’t be applying at the library if they didn’t have a working knowledge and love of books, right?
