Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia:
A noisy group of disabled people today confronted a member of Parliament over an insensitive remark he utterred in the Malaysian Parliament.
Ibrahim Ali, the member of Parliament for the Pasir Mas Constituency was reported to have utterred insensitive remarks in a clash of words with fellow member of Parliament from the Democratic Action Party. Ironically, both were members of the People’s Coalition.
Karpal Singh, who was wheel-chair-bound, was also the Chairman of the DAP. Several days earlier, Karpal was questioning the legal basis of the Sultan of Perak who had ordered the reinstatement of a senior Department head.
This action did not go well in the house. Some members have called him a traitor since his act was considered a treason. It was during this commotion that Ibrahim challenged Karpal to stand up when asking question. Karpal took this challenge badly since he cannot stand. He told the chamber that Ibrahim was insulting a disabled.
When the news was flashed on TV, it caused an uproar.
The next day, agroup of wheel-chair bound protesters waited for Ibrahim in lobby of the Parliament. The clash occurred when Ibrahim was walking out to his car. Since there is no other way he had to endure the taunts and name calling. Shouts were heard. However, Ibrahim, who have faced more serious situations walked on after some attempts of explanation.
