When mentors turn tormentors

I remember as a kid, my parents used to tell me that Teachers are the most respectable people who give a healthy shape to the growing minds of the children. And truly, even the teachers of our generation were such that they commanded respect, admiration and attention because of their just ways and a life full of principles and discipline.

But all seems to have just withered away with time now. Today, there are definitely more number of schools than what used to be during earlier days. Today, there are better books and better teaching facilities than what used to be during earlier times. But ironically, the quality of teachers and students both have gone down at a real alarming rate.

Teachers today have become more money minded and concentrate more on amassing more and more students for their home tuitions than taking care of their responsibilities more sincerely at school. Unfortunately, the new recruitments filling the ranks of teachers for government schools don’t come to school just for the passion of teaching; rather, it is the lure of a safe and easy job that makes them join these schools as teacher after paying a good amount of money as bribe to the people involved with the recruitment procedure.

And understandably, if you have such mentors teaching the students for preparing a solid base for the future; you are bound to have shaky foundation which can only produce confused youngsters, not sure about their footing in any sphere of life.

The recent incident of a school girl’s death after severe punishment highlights the poor state of mind of these Teachers; who are not able to realize the enormity of the task of teaching a young mind. Although, it is difficult to say what would have been the circumstances that may have forced the teacher to inflict such a drastic punishment on the child; but still it does call for a serious introspection of the recruitment procedure for these Teachers.

One most important thing that we have got to realize that the process of educating a child to grow as a good citizen actually begins at the school; and if the teachers don’t have the right frame of mind to do this important job with utmost care, then we are seriously sowing the seeds of a dark future ahead.
