The standards of teaching has to change with the recent issues of teachers violating the profession and standards with inappropriate conduct involving students. Ever since Mary Kay Letourneau was convicted of having sexual relations with a former student of hers this changes the face of how teachers are going to be viewed. This means the teachers who are going to be new to the field have to than this woman for implementing standards in place to stop people from entering a field where they’re going to be working with children and to discourage inappropriate relations. What can be done so that new teachers who get hired and who do adhere to academic integrity don’t have to be under the scrutiny of background checks and other kinds of measures to make sure they’re of sound mind and character to teach in the public or private school system.
Where is the criminal justice system going wrong when they have convicted sex offenders that are permitted to fall through the cracks like the one guy who was convicted sex offender from Utah who wound up working as a pizza delivery man and committed a sex crime and the establishment he worked for had no idea he was a sex offender. What can the system do to improve itself so it can have better ways of tracking these people and should a law be implemented that sex offenders or someone convicted of a violent crime can’t legally change their name to go under the radar? Would this be ideal to help improve the standards of teachers entering the field and not feel like they won’t have the trust of their profession and parents who trust them to educate their children. It hurts the field to know that Mary Kay Letourneau and others like her have violated what is considered to be the most rewarding careers around. Too many teachers give their lives to the children they educate because they love what they do, but they have teachers in this world who don’t adhere to the integrity of the academic community and those who trust them to work in it with dignity and respect.
In time the system will be improved so that people entering the field to teach or where they will be working with children or people will not be allowed to fall on the wayside and allowed to go under the radar and remain undetected. Mary Kay Letourneau was a sick woman and to know she married her victim just makes anyone wonder if she’s completely and totally incapable to say she’s got morals. You wonder why her husband uprooted their children and moved to Alaska to get away from the media hoopla that surrounded this case. In Mary Kay’s case she was looking fulfill her loneliness through a child that was deemed inappropriate and she wasn’t thinking about the impact her actions had on Villi Falaau. This young man will not look at love and sex the way a normal adult would because he was exposed to it at such a young age it rendered him confused and misguided. I hope the two children out of this are going to learn that their mother had a problem and that what she did wasn’t normal.
It doesn’t make a lot of sense that teachers coming into this profession are not going to be treated right due to a few bad apples ruining it for them.
