Spare the rod and spoil the child is the proverb which adequately fits in dog-training; it is the dog lover who keeps the dog, and if you are a dog lover, you have to be also a lover of animals. Your close contact with the quadrupeds, birds and beast, fish or other beings urge you to understand them and in understanding hem, the first mistake that you may make, is to be soft towards them, to give them, so to say, over-indulgence.
There are many dog-lovers who love the dog at the puppy stage? The puppy also loves him. The puppy recognizes him as the master of the house. He runs and jumps at him to show his affection, he cuddles around him, sits at his feet and does other things to show his emotion and sensitivity. The master of the house is flattered at this attention. Strange to say, but we human beings do crave for continuous attention, and this attention which does not waver, does not deteriorate, he gets from his pet.
The master therefore will love his pet and he will overlook small faults. He will laugh at the small mischief, small destructions, like the chewing of the baby boy’s shoe, the teaching of a lady’s handkerchief, he finds these minor tantrums amusing. He does not realize that the puppy which is gradually turning into a dog or a bitch, is not an inanimate, insensate object but is a creature which has its own world, own languages, own code of conduct, own morality. Therefore, the animal also has its cunningness its sense of preservation, its intuition. By the time the puppy grows up, he knows the master is the head of the family. The master is the judge, the lawgiver, the penalty-inflicted. If therefore, he (dog) can get round the master, he has nobody to fear, because the others cannot in fact touch him to that extent.
