In a ghastly incident, a husband killed his wife after finding money missing from his pocket. The incident occurred in Karimpur town of Nadia District of West Bengal on the morning of June 13, when Subir Karmakar, the announcer of Karimpur bus stand, inspected his pockets and found that Rs.15/- was missing from the amount he usually kept.
Karmakar asked his son about the money and his son denied taking it. Subir did not believe him and started beating his son with a stick. Hearing the cry of her son, his mother Menoka came to the rescue. This further enraged Subir, who asked his wife whether she has taken the missing money. Her denial infuriated him more and he started beating his wife with the stick. His son, a student of class VIII, snatched the stick from the hand of his father in an attempt to save his mother. Subir in a fit of rage again gathered a bamboo pole and started beating his wife indiscriminately.
Hearing the shouts and wail of the mother and son, the neighbours rushed to the spot only to find Menoka fallen on the floor bleeding profusely. They immediately rushed Menoka to Karimpur Hospital and from there to Baharampur General Hospital as her condition deteriorated. There, after fighting for life for two days, she succumbed to her injuries in the morning of June 15. The incident occurred in spite of the fact that the father’s house of Menoka was just nearby. Her sister-in-law said, “Subir was in the habit of quarreling over trivial matters and used to beat his wife; but such an incident can occur for just Rs.15/- was beyond our imagination.” The officer in charge of Karimpur Police Station said that Subir has been arrested on the complaint of his in-laws.
