For the kidnap, torture, and murder of her husband Daniel Pearl, Mariane Pearl had filed the lawsuit in July. The lawsuit was filed against Osama Bin Laden’s terrorist network Al-Qaeda, a Pakistani bank, and other groups. It would seek damages not specified against terrorists, terrorist organizations, the supporting of organizations for kidnapping, torture, and murder of her husband.
During the time of Daniel Pearl’s kidnapping, he was the Wall Street Journal’s South Asia bureau chief. He was kidnapped in Karachi, Pakistan in 2002. Daniel Pearl was seeking interviews with suspected Islamic militants. His death by decapitation was recorded on video.
Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh was already convicted and sentenced to death in a Pakistan court for the role in the murder. He is one of them mentioned in the lawsuit filed by Mariane Pearl. The other three involved in the kidnapping, torture, and death of Daniel Pearl are serving life sentences.
Another defendant mentioned is Khalid Sheikh Mohammad. Mohammad is allegedly the mastermind of the September 11 attacks. In March, Mohammad told a United States military tribunal that he was the one who had beheaded Daniel Pearl.
Habib Bank Limited which is one of Pakistan’s largest banks is also mentioned in the lawsuit that was dismissed. Mariane Pearl had accused Habib Bank Limited that they knew they conducted financial transactions for charity groups linked to such terrorist organizations. But the bank denied the accusations.
Mariane Pearl decided not to pursue the case any further. The notice of voluntary dismissal was filed late Tuesday, October 23. During the time of Daniel Pearl’s death, Mariane Pearl was six-months pregnant.
