Million of species of plants and animals have become extinct (died out) around the world since life began on earth. In the past 300 years people have speeded up the extinction process more than 1000 times by destroying habitats, polluting the environment and by hunting. There are probably one million species that are in danger of dying out within the ext 20 years, unless we act now to save the unnecessary extinction.
Dachigam sanctuary
It is located in Kashmir ad is particularly noted for the Hangul or Kashmir stag. Himalayan black bear and wild pigs are also found in lower Dechigram.
Chandar Prabha sanctuary
It is situated near Varanasi and is surrounded by the Vindhya rage of mountains. A special importance of the sanctuary is derived from the fact that it was selected by the Utter Pradesh Government as an alternative home for the Indian lions.
Kaziranga sanctuary (Assam)
It is world famous as the main stronghold of the great Indian one horned rhinoceros. There are believed to be at least 250 rhinos in this sanctuary. Also to be found are magnificent wild buffaloes, sambar, wild pigs and wild elephant.
Bandipur sanctuary
This is situated in Karnataka and is particularly noted for its fine herd of spotted deer.
Mudumalai sanctuary
It is situated on the Tamil Nadu side of inter-state boundary and is adjacent to Bandipur, but it differs in some respects from the Karnataka sanctuary. The main animals to be seen are elephant, sambar and barking deer.
