WILL THE SWAMI LED BORN-AGAIN SOUTH BLOCKERS WIN OVER MODI/NDA TO STALL THE UNHRC WAR CRIMES ACTION TO SAVE THE RAJAPAKSES AND PROLONG THE TAMIL TRAUMA?
Following the decisive win of Modi/NDA, the South Blockers have re-grouped to form a group led by Swamy/Das Gupta/Chari to highjack the debate on Indo-SL relations to save the Rajapakses from the war crimes charges of the UNHRC. Swamy’s initiative follows on Swamy’s recent lobbying contracts with the Rajapakses to end the trauma for the Tamils caused by the SL majoritarian oppression. Swamy was for about a year or more sneaking into the Rajapakses offices representing that he was the spokesperson for Modi and the NDA government. The Rajapakses was also desperately also prospecting for fresh lobbyists/apologists to carry forward SL’s agenda to protect the Rajapakses/SL from the UNHRC’s war crimes charges that were closing in fast on them. The visits by contractor lobbyists/apologists to the Rajapakses were apparently growing more frequent though apologies pleading against the war crime charges on the Rajapakses only appeared infrequently and in unheard of newsprints. It is amusing that Swamy ended up as Rajapakse lobbyist and also close advisor to Modi/BJP only acting informally and not in any official capacity with authority to negotiate/comment on Indo-SL relations.
Swapan, Swamy’s associate defending the Rajapakses from the UNHRC crime charges had visited Jaffna/SL only briefly in the past one year to produce scanty apologies that living conditions of the Tamils were improving thanks to the efforts of the Rajapakse regime. Swapan’s apologies failed to impress the UNHRC. Swapan Das Gupta poorly informed as he was on conditions in SL when he used information that was sourced from Swamy; a biased, second hand source. The quality of the services provided explains why it failed as quickly once Modi pulled the rug under the Swamy group in association with born again South Blockers. Swapan’s eloquence is limited to describing the brutality of Tamil Tiger fighters defeated by the SL armed forces in May 2009, ending the threat to anyone else in the world. Swapan as a contract apologist for Rajapakses refers to the SL army as a ceremonial force that hardened..only after it faced the bloodthirstiness of the LTTE..’ The efficacy and wisdom of Tamil separatism in SL may occasion legitimate debate… But there can be no debate over the fact that the LTTE personified evil”. The prejudice mindset that Swamy injected into his (Swapan’s) team’s mindset was inadequate for Swapan to improve the quality of his SL narrative. ‘Swamy’s reluctance..to take on board formal pronouncements …..of the Dravidian parties of Tamil Nadu.inhibited .. the real face of the LTTE and the danger it posed..being known.. to the (UPA) pundits in New Delhi..(that allowed..LTTE’s calculated, cold blooded murder of Rajiv Gandhi..to occur) The imperatives of coalition politics may have forced the Congress to enter an alliance with the Dravidian forces..but..domestic expediency is no reason to forget the past entirely.. ..The Bandaranaike family ..trigger(ed) the ethnic polarization in 1956…the Buddhist clergy had a role in stoking majoritarianism…also responsible, was India.. Would the LTTE have emerged as a force had it not been for New Delhi’s covert support (Rajapakse story)? To the LTTE..Swapan was not around in TN and hence does not blame the UPA as.. Devasahayam’s ‘Shenanigan in Sri Lanka’ (Outlookindia 26 August 2014) is too reputed as an analyst that readers may safely dismiss Swamy as too light weight; for the performance of Swamy in the popular recent TIMESNOW- Jaya verses Swamy fight at 7 RCR episode dismal ..’ ‘on critical points Swamy expressed annoyance with the affable anchor/editor in chief and fellow panelists’. Devasahayam’s portrayal of Swamy as a noted shenanigan is as candid as it turned out to be in the Timesnow show that when a cornered Swamy unable to comprehend the changes that the Modi era was about to usher in India left a shallow skilled lobbyist exposed to naked public scrutiny… Devastating for Swamy, reputed analysts like Devasahayam perhaps provided a talented Modi with suggestions for changes in policies for real peace to emerge for those afflicted by several decades of injustice. The thinking for this kind of change required the rejection of the casual Swamy chants pleasing to SL but not refined enough to address the fundamentals of the conflict for a clearer, unprejudiced perspective for real peace to emerge in SL.
The genocide in Sri Lanka (SL) started in 1948 totally unnoticed when a major section of the Tamil community was disenfranchised (the majoritarians derisively called them ‘kallaththonis’) soon after independence allowing the majoritarian Sinhala regimes to deprive them an important section of the minority community (the up country Tamils) of their basic voting rights; effectively their sovereignty. The regular mob violence instigated by the majoritarians to drive North the Tamils living in the South to their homelands that was also genocide to fulfill the majoritarian’s slogan ‘demalas balai yanda yappanatta’. The use of the police and armed force with emergency powers not necessarily in riot situations caused the Tamil exodus to the North, first as refugees in boats; but thereafter also as refugees also in boats worldwide affecting more than half the Tamil population in SL. If born again Swamy and Co do not view the numbers affected by such cruel displacements as genocide effectively depriving from the Tamils of their sovereign rights to life or survival. Tarzie Vittachi in his classic ’58 emergency’ is most descriptive on how this oppression was inflicted on the minority Tamils. The affected minorities who lost their sovereign right to protect their lives and meager assets resorted to violence on losing their political fights to win back their sovereign rights that was principally their rights to survival first and foremost.
Indian thinking is or was not as inhibited as Sinhala majoritarian thinking that the Indian federal model was a viable alternative for the Tamils in SL since the 60’ies. Hence the Indian federal model incorporated in the Banda-Chelva and the Dudley- Chelva pacts that the SL Prime Ministers then signed. Once the majoritarian Sinhala opinion rejected support for such an accommodation the belief that the Tamils and Sinhala communities could live together in peace in SL under an Indian model federal arrangement was lost. Delhi still pursued the Indian federal or autonomy model actively despite SL rejecting the 13 Amendment with the federal provisions Delhi agreed to covertly support the Tamil armed resistance. Only when the Dravidian movements became a major force in TN politics and interfered with the Congress re-emerging as a major political force in the Centre, Congress opted for anti-Dravida, anti-Tamil policies labeling Tamils fighting for the autonomy as separatists like the Kashmiri demand threatening the unity of Indian union. The sectarians who sneaked into Delhi as South Blockers assumed leadership positions in the bureaucracy to discourage the federal model becoming part of Tamil /Dravida thinking in India as a crucial part of the Indian thinking.
Even though the Congress was not powerful enough to assume the leadership role in TN it still accepted the Sonia led Congress leadership under UPA1 & 2 rule and despite the assassination of Rajiv by the Eelamites yet the born again South Blockers began to ally with the majoritarian Sinhalas to blame the Eelam Tamil resistance (LTTE) as separatists.
There is enough evidence in public domain on Sonia’s UPA South Blocker’s involvement in the final stages of the war for the SL Defense Secretary to publicly hold out that the ‘in the loop role ..of the South Blockers in whatever crimes SL was committing. Along with this the South Block sectarian’s bias that crept into the Delhi thinking explains the inability of the UPA Congress to recognize that the distinct communities in SL to survive needed safeguards. The world in reacting to similar conditions in most instances opted for the creation of independent states with or without protection for the minorities. Pakistan, Bangladesh, East Timor, North Cyprus were created by design. The international community either singly or collectively created independent states when the majoritarians resorted to violence to totally eliminate the minority communities. The international community over a period of time also encouraged the creation of institutions like the UNHRC to control majoritarian excesses effectively the excesses of genocide.
Devasahayam breathes freshness into the debate to stimulate the changes the world was thirsting for. The debates on the Rajapakse crimes, had already turned unbearably putrid with analysts and lobbyists polluting the debate with stale and recycled viewpoints authored by Sri Lanka and South Block connected paid scribes. That the debate presented by the UPA/South Block scribes became most outdated once the Modi victory in 2014 pointed out that the excesses of Rajapaskse’s genocide cult subjecting the Eelam Tamils to massacres and other unbearable forms of atrocities needed change.
The scholarly Devasahayam calling those active lobbyist/apologists who still supported the SL genocide as ‘shenanigans’ or new born apologists/lobbyist are unlikely to face a supportive Modi especially when Rajapakses defiantly reject the federal/autonomy provisions in the 13 Amendment as unacceptable in resolving the ethnic conflict effectively orphaning the Eelam Tamils. Modi’s Delhi was left with no alternative but support the Indian federal model duly strengthened as 13 Amendment + with the Rajapakses working towards the opposite goal which is; finish off the Tamils as a community habituating North SL. Chandrasiri as governor vested with the responsibility to accomplish Rajapakses genocide goal implicates in the crimes that UNHRC is mandated to fight against.
Swamy’s most feared record that Indian politicians fear even hurting past Indian PMs and politicians (Chandre Sheker and ..may come to haunt Modi and the BJP. In the latest contest Modi as an agent of change deal with the lobbyist of an accomplished genocider like Rajapakse and lobby Modi to protect Swamy’s genocider? With Swamy helping a genocider attempting to wriggle out of the UNHRC crimes action Modi to bring genociders to account for the genocide crimes Swamy is caught in an duplitious conflict of interest situation that the demands of both the parties could not be met without acts of betrayal. Swamy promised the Rajapakses that he will ensure that Modi will not meet TNA but the day this claim Modi officially in fact met Modi and his officials. Swamy was in fact locked into a devastating conflict of interest situation. Swamy claim to the Rajapakes that Modi was locked into his influence ambit and he could save Rajapakse with Modi’s assistance. How naïve was Swamy that he could achieve such a feat.
Likewise Swamy promised to the Rajapakses that Katchchivu was a non-issue and safe for SL arguing hard that that the gifting of Katchchativu was over (when it was still before the courts) when in fact he went to the island a couple of years ago and hoisted the Indian flag. What is Swamy’s exact positions and where does the island’s position lie when the Rajapakses, Modi and all Indians to made to believe other wise when the position holds out is nothing but the truth? Swamy by such comic claims is keeping kept both the Indian and Sri Lankans in ‘suspended animation’. How reliable is Swamy and the Rajapakses on this emotive issue emotive to both SL and India.
