Grace Gelder, of Devon, England married Grace Gelder of Devon, England at a small ceremony in a farmhouse, earlier this year.
Gelder had apparently tired of being single and decided that since she knew herself so well, she was the best person for her to marry. Her parents didn’t make it to the marriage due to “logistical reasons” but they sent her “supportive texts throughout the day.” Gelder’s friends took things “in a light-hearted way”, though they were of the opinion that Gelder was being too “narcissistic”. Gelder however is quite sure of what she is doing and why she is doing it.
Thanks to a series of explorations in dance, meditation Shakti Path and Tantra, that helped her focused on sexuality and relate better with people, sh had decided that she would make the choice to marry herself.
Her bridesmaid for the unusual event was her close friend Tiu, who had been a great support throughout the day and leading up to the event. Gelder had earlier proposed to herself on Parliament Hill in London in 2013, and had accepted! Her inspiration came from a song by musician Bjork, titled Isobel. “My name’s Isobel, married to myself,” went the song, and this pushed Gelder, along with her experience in the yoga program to go for bust.
Gelder had on a vintage wedding gown, and a ring that she placed on her own finger, befoe proceeding to kiss herself in a mirror. Gelder also made vows! But just to ensure that all doors are open for the future, she has stated quite clearly that “just because I married myself doesn’t mean that I’m not open to the idea of sharing a wedding with someone else one day”!
