Because everything is not mathematical, women tend to buy stuff that is void of any equations. This time being close to eidulfitr in Pakistan, shopping malls and markets seem to be full of female heads. Women shop with respect to their impulse waves. By impulse waves, I refer to the fact that they will hate ‘two-thirds of what is in their closets’ soon after the eidulfitr is gone. Being a woman myself, I can relate this situation to my buying habits quite well. Call it a dilemma or something imbedded in female genes, women have no math to shopping lists. No matter how many clothes they have in their closet, there is always a gap between their dreams of perfect fabric and how the fabric actually turns out to be. Some women shop simply to take their depression and household tensions out, while others shop to be a part of the so-called ‘societal pressures’ to which they have to succumb. For instance, the recent rise of ‘kameti-parties’ culture has led women to boast about new clothes, designer footwear, bangles, diamonds and what not. This culture is taking its shape quite rapidly in Pakistan. Again, this happens in the posh areas of big cities such as Faisalabad, Lahore, Multan, and Karachi, so on and so forth. The clothes worn on festivals, grand weddings, kameti parties are hated when next time an event pops up.
Let’s now come to figure out what the reasons are. Maybe we can attach psychological connotations to this attitude. Such as to female is to shop and to shop is to hate later? These adjectives usually do not work for females. And it usually takes two years to dispose of the ‘old-used-clothing’. There can no reasoning be tied up to such behavior. However, it is time women realize that they rotate between two or three pairs of shoes, one bag and five suits around the year and not mug in their wardrobe any more!
