Jammu, March 10 (Scoop News) – Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik informed the House that the Government Degree College, Kupwara has been established in 1988 with Arts and Science streams. From the academic year 2010-11, the Commerce stream has also been introduced in the college, he said. He said of the total 2915 students on roll as many as 1166 comprise girls.
Replying to a Call Attention Notice by Syed Mohammad Rafiq Shah in Legislative Council today, he said the Government Degree College, Kupwara has dedicated Hostel Rooms for girls and at present 30 girl students are residing in the hostel.
He said the girl students of Kupwara are also pursuing their studies in Government Degree College, Handwara. They also seek admission in any college in the State including the Women Colleges in Srinagar, he added.
The Minister said considering the low Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of girl students in Kupwara, establishment of a separate Government College for Women at Kupwara is under the active consideration of the Government.
