Jammu,March 8 (Scoop News) – “Unless you empower the women how can this society prosper and progress” the lone woman Minister for Social Welfare of J&K government Sakina Itoo today asked while emphasising the crucial role of the women in nation building
Sakina Itoo said that significant change is desirable in the mindset of people towards women, as there is growing consciousness in the society that progress of the nation will be elusive unless the fair sex is fully empowered.

Referring to the laws, enacted for protection of women and safeguarding their rights, Ms. Sakina said these have to be implemented in letter and spirit and every possible step needs to be taken for putting an end to atrocities being committed against the helpless women.
The Minister said that the Government has initiated numerous schemes for making women economically self reliant and giving them their due place in the society. She observed women have achieved many successes in different walks of life and it is now for such women who have attained significant position in bureaucracy or politics to shape the destiny of the large chunk of women, living in misery, particularly in remote and far flung areas. She also enumerated the steps being taken by the State Government with regard to emancipation
Later the Minister distributed cheques of Rs. 11.50 lakh among the Self Help groups for establishing their own Income generating units. The function was organised by J&K Women Development Corporation in collaboration with Women Study Centre Gandhi Nagar.
Secretary, Social Welfare, M.S Khan said that every citizen must honour the laws enacted to provide protection and also to achieve objectives of development by involving women in the process. He said that in a democratic set-up all the citizens have equal rights, both men and women.
The Managing Director, National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation Abrar Ahmad has assured all possible help for socio economic upliftment of women, particularly those living in to weaker section of the society to WDC. He said that Corporation has taken various progressive steps for welfare of the women.
The Managing Director, WDC, Dr. Nahida Soz, in her welcome address, gave a brief appraisal of various empowerment schemes being implemented by the J&K WDC. She asked the women to come forward and avail benefits of these schemes.
