Jammu, November 02 (Scoop News) –The 2-day National Workshop on “Convention on Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women” organized by Centre for Women’s Studies, Government College for Women, Parade and sponsored by University Grant Commission, New Delhi concluded here today.
Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo, was the chief guest on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister appreciated the organisors for holding this valuable workshop which will prove very fruitful in sensitizing intellectuals, policy makers, law enforcing agencies and above all civil society towards the rightful place of women and recognition of their contribution in the progress and development of humanity. She advocated frequent holding of such programmes which will immensely help in further reducing the incidents of discrimination against the women.
Ms. Sakina said that women are now excelling in every important sphere of life thus making the society realize their presence which is vital for progress and prosperity of the country. She stressed upon the women to actively participate in all social and political affairs of their respective areas so that their contribution towards society’s development is also recognized.
Highlighting government’s policies formulated to deal against discrimination and atrocities being committed on women, the Minister asked the concerned authorities to ensure strict enforcement of such rules to dodge bias against women. She also asked for creating awareness among the women especially of rural and far off areas about their rights and responsibilities as well for effective implementation of female welfare programmes launched by the coalition government.
The Minister said Social Welfare Department is extending the benefits of various schemes to more and more women irrespective of caste, class, religion and region. She said that the Government is committed to improve the lot of women and remove their vulnerability by establishing a strong legal frame work. She said that the department is presently running a number of schemes for upliftment and empowerment of women like schemes run by Women’s Development Corporation, ICD, Financial Support through Pension Scheme, Scheme for Empowerment of skilled women, Protection women against Domestic Violence Act., Empowerment of Adolescent Girls.
